Young people from the Lewis Road Estate created a giant multi-coloured floor mural under the guidance of community artist Paul Gent.
The project was pioneered by the Warwick Way Tenants Association in March 2003, and after-school workshops were held at Robert Bakewell Primary School, Loughborough, where some of the older children were taught to use spray paints.
A fun day was held on completion of the mural, raising over £280 for future events.
The playground was officially opened by the Mayor of Charnwood, Neville Bird. The commitment of residents to improve their environment should be encouraging to people living in similar areas that have often been burdened with a bad reputation.
The project was funded by Charnwood Borough Council Arts grants scheme and a Community Champions Award.
