The Story of Me and My Town

The Story of Me and My Town

In a double link with the city of Tokyo, Charnwood Arts will bring an interesting insight into Japanese social history and everyday life to Hind Leys College in Shepshed this Autumn. Following two years in which the Director of Tokyo based Muse Company, Yuko Ijichi, studied the work of Charnwood Arts the two companies have come together to collaborate on this project. The original work upon which the Shepshed exhibition is based involved a creative photographic and reminiscence project organised with the Creative Art Executive Committee in the Minato district of Tokyo. After the production of two books (with the Minato City Government), numerous exhibitions and an international touring collaboration with Nottingham based artist Jeanie Finlay, a selection of the original exhibition now comes to Leicestershire. Charnwood Arts hope to use this as a launch pad for a similar project in Shepshed and visitors to the exhibition will be invited to leave their own ideas and stories related to the themes that the exhibition explores. The exhibition will also contain a fascinating range of contemporary photographs from the streets of Tokyo taken by French-American photographer, Francis Harrison.

In the first week of the exhibition Yuko Ijichi will be visiting Shepshed and Loughborough with artist Yohei Nishimura. Mr Nishimura will be running an extended arts workshop between the 3rd-5th September. Workshop co-ordinator Jemma Bagely said “Mr Nishimura’s arts workshop will give an insight into his working methods, particularly in terms of the work he undertakes with sight impaired participants. We would welcome contacts from artists, people with sight impairments and the general public interested in attending.”

The exhibition, which is part of Charnwood Arts ‘People Making Places’ programme, opens at the Mark Parker Gallery at the college from the 3rd September and runs for six weeks. The private view and opening reception takes place on the 5th September between 7 – 9 pm and is open to anyone wishing to attend.

‘The Story of Me and My Town’ exhibits a selection of historic photographs and personal stories related to people in the Minato-ward of Tokyo as a legacy of the local connections with Japan through the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the summer of 2012. The exhibition will also reference the Tokyo Olympics of 1964.

Originally, ‘The Story of Me and My Town’ was a community arts project that was run from 2003 to 2007 and earlier on in 2012 in Minato-ward, Tokyo, Japan.

Minato-ward, where urban re-development is still underway, is suffering rapidly vanishing ties within the community. This is due to both the outflow of population and the ageing of remaining residents as well as the more mobilized lives of newcomers to the community. In such circumstances, older people are feeling more and more isolated. The Creative Art Executive Committee established the community arts project with the aim of promoting communication between residents of different generations and between new and old residents in the community.

The project did this through interviewing older people about their memories based on their old photographs and then exhibiting these photos and stories. Two fantastic books were also produced with the Minato City Government as part of the project as well as a linked video, photography and installation work by UK artist and film-maker Jeannie Finlay. Entitled ‘Homemaker’ this was exhibited internationally.

Charnwood Arts has also undertaken numerous projects along the same lines in Charnwood under our People Making Places programme and we plan to develop a new community project in Shepshed based on this exhibition.
