Rag Pickers Project

Information

The Rag Pickers project mainly consists of a set of 20 foam exhibition boards taken from the work of professional photographer Kajal Nisha Patel. Kajal visited India in 2007 as part of an internship with Indicorp, the purpose of her internship was to immerse herself into a local community in order to contribute to grass routes development with them. Kaj found herself deeply affected by the plight of a group of 'Rag Picking' women and launched her own initiative called 'Satyaprakash' or Light of Truth. This took the form of an extensive photographic exhibition which was then launched online as part of our online/offline exhibition 'Pixel and Grain' see http://members.charnwoodarts.com/pixelandgrain/012-Kaj_Patel/index.html

Our Kala Kahani project then decided to utilise the photographs even further by turning 20 of them into an exhibition consisting of 20 foam boards that can be loaned out free of charge to Schools, Colleges and community groups. As part of the Kala Kahani programme Kajal hosts workshops with children about her work which fits particularly well into the National Curriculum. There is also an educational pack and teaching support material to accompany the exhibition.
