Picnic In The Park 2014!

Information

To mark the 100th Anniversary of the onset of the Great War, this year's Picnic In The Park on Saturday June 14th will be acknowledging the significance of the landmark building that stands at the centre of Loughborough's Queen’s Park.

With generous support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and working with our partners Bill Brookman Productions, Charnwood Arts will be bringing you a host of First World War themed performances throughout the afternoon on our ‘Over by Christmas Stage’. From period music to Peace speeches, meet ‘Old Billy’, folk musicians ‘Tommy Atkin’s Army’ and many more....

The Carillon Museum and other organisations will be open have displays in the park and there will be opportunities for people to share their own stories and family histories. Participation in Action will be on hand to recruit volunteers who might want to help with the project. The focal point for "Over by Christmas" will be the area around the Carillon.

When the war ended in November 1918, memorials were commissioned across the country to remember those who had fallen and perhaps one of the larger nonmetropolitan memorials to be built in the UK was that of the famous Loughborough Carillon Tower. As part of the process to raise money for this the ‘Grand Bazaar’ was organised in Queen’s Park in 1923 featuring a host of stalls.

Fast forward to 2014 and the park is still a place for organised community activities in the heart of Loughborough. This year we hope you enjoy our own ‘Grand Bazaar’ of familiar Picnic fayre of stalls, food, arts activities and performances. Special events include Giant Edwardian Games and a one-off visit from exciting Super Hero 'Super Crochet Girl'!

The day begins at 12 noon with activities and performances in the park until 5.00pm - a whole afternoon of actvities for all the family.

Community groups are welcome to have a stall or bring along performers and, as always, we are looking for stallholders, volunteers, street performers, dancers, singers and musicians.

So pack up your sarnies, fill up your flask and spend the afternoon (hopefully!) enjoying the sunshine and all the great entertainment.
