Young people aged 14 to 25 were discovering their hidden musical talents at the Next Level venue in the summer of 2002 in a week-long series of workshops run by Corey Mwamba and Walt Shaw as part of the CYAN season of summer activities.
In the workshops people began by learning how to keep a beat going through clapping and "chimping" exercises, then used the same skills with instruments such as gongs, slit drums, plant pots and a bicycle wheel!
The group then went on to try some improvisation and "textural" pieces. By the end of the week both rhythm and improvisation were combined to create a piece that was played on not only the musical instruments, but walls, radiators and in one case a step ladder.
The people involved got a lot out of the week.
"Before I started the only musical talent I had was blowing over bottle tops," said Jacob Robinson (18) "But now I'm seeing potential instruments everywhere!"
