Burleigh Community College

Welcome to Burleigh Community College. This information gives an insight into our work, an understanding of our purpose and an appreciation of our many outstanding achievements.

Burleigh Community College has a clear set of values, the principle being that we value equally the education of every individual whatever talents, background or status they have. We expect students to respect others, be community minded, work hard in lessons and to achieve their potential. We, in return, continuously strive to deliver high quality lessons, strong discipline and a supportive environment.

Burleigh provides many exciting challenges and opportunities. There are many extra curricular, evening and holiday classes and activities. We are a nationally recognised specialist sports college and have a boarding house.

At Burleigh we work in partnership with our young people and with their parents.

Our mission statement 'learning for life' summarises our purpose. We aim to ensure that all young people are prepared for life after college. We firmly believe that education should take place beyond the school day - hence our commitment to extra curricular activities, homework, evening and holiday classes and activities for the entire community.

We deliver a diverse curriculum which offers breadth and continuity and provides opportunity for all. Our results and our facilities are outstanding.

As a specialist Sports College we enjoy enhanced facilities and staffing and provide a model for other schools.

The College has an annual intake of over 400 in Year 10 and a total of approximately 1275. There are about 450 students in our large and thriving Sixth Form. Most of our students come from three main feeder High Schools, Garendon, Limehurst and Woodbrook Vale. Students from Mapelwell Special Schools and De Lisle Secondary School follow courses at Burleigh. Increasingly, students come from out of Loughborough and our boarders come from as far afield as Germany, Hong Kong and all parts of the British Isles.

Our status as a Community College means that we have exceptional facilities. Our National Lottery funded Sports Centre and revamped Swimming Pool are a tremendous asset not only to our students but also to the whole community. Over recent years we have established 9 fully equipped computer suites with internet access and Microsoft software. We run a weekly music school, employing up to 30 specialist musicians and providing individual tuition for nearly one hundred students. As a Specialist College, our provision for PE and sport is exceptional.

Students not only benefit from our superb facilities but also from the combined expertise of more than 100 well-qualified teachers and 50 support staff. Visitors often comment on the purposefulness of the College and the attractive environment, which aids high quality learning. We believe that the resources we are able to provide - both material and human - make it possible for every student to achieve their maximum potential. This requires hard work and tremendous commitment on the part of teacher and learner. Our aim is to achieve high standards in everything we do - in examination performance, in supporting those who have difficulty and in extra curricular activities.

Our Examinations success bears testimony to this endeavour. We have students who achieve 10 Grade A/A* passes in their GCSE and 4 straight grade A grades in their A Levels. Each year over 100 are successful in gaining places on University courses. Our sports stars bring home county and national honours. Our drama productions and musical concerts attract critical acclaim. Students win national prizes in literature and art competitions. We are one of a few schools in the country to achieve both the prestige Sports Mark Gold and Arts Mark Gold Award.
