Read Me, Write Me, Draw Me, Tell Me Children’s Literature Festival

The first ‘Read Me, Write Me, Draw Me, Tell Me Children’s Literature Festival’ comes to Loughborough over half term! We are offering a whole realm of activities and welcoming some big names when we launch our young people’s festival from May 28th to June 1st. Writers, artists and performers – all leaders in their fields - will be gathering in Loughborough for an exciting week of literary, artistic, and craft workshops in what is thought to be one of the first such festivals in the East Midlands.

Two nationally known figures have agreed to be patrons of the festival - author Alison Moore, shortlisted for last year’s Man-Booker Prize and artist Shona Kinloch - renowned sculptor and creator of Loughborough’s much loved Sock Man.

And the famous names don’t end there. TV and radio star, poet, writer and comedian John Hegley – once called “One of the funniest men alive” by Adrian Mitchell – will be leading a workshop called ‘Writing and Drawing a Wheelbarrow’. This will be a playful time with some rhyme and not a lot of reason. Everybody will go home with a little book which they can photocopy, sell and make their fortune with! An Edinburgh Festival regular, John Hegley is noted for his exploration of such diverse topics as glasses, dog hair, potatoes and handkerchiefs so wheelbarrows should be no problem!

The illustrator of the award winning “Horrible Science” series (sister books to “Horrible Histories”) is the multi-talented artist and cartoonist Tony de Saulles. In his workshop ‘How to draw Horrible Science’, he will not only be giving loads of horrible cartooning tips while you sketch but also teach you how to bring a lavatory to life and why a 17th Century scientist ate his own sick… If you like drawing the disgusting and illustrating the inexpressible, this fun family cartoon-drawing workshop is for you!

The whole week is packed with fun for all ages, from 3 to 16, depending on the workshop. For the youngest age group, Dawn Powell (author of “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt”) will be telling tales to make you shiver, giggle and gasp. Rachel Scanlon will be showing the 7-11s not only how to make puppets but how to put them into a story and a play. And if you’re aged 9-16, top author Bali Rai will be showing you “How To Write A Ghost Story”!

Other events include ‘Mista Mojo’s Marvelous Mobile Magic School’, ‘Hand Shadow Puppets’ with Drew Colby, ‘Origami Box’ with Ruth Singer, ‘Giant Comic Strip’ with James Parsons and a whole day of workshops and performances with Lydia Towsey and Tim Bombdog. That’s just a few of the many events on offer from “Read Me, Write Me, Draw Me, Tell Me” between May 28th to June 1st, in venues all round the centre of Loughborough

Tickets can be booked on www.bookwhen.com/charnwoodarts

Or any enquiries can be directed to Rebecca Abrahams on 01509 821035 or email rebecca.abrahams@charnwoodarts.com

St Mary-in-Charnwood Church

Situated on the west edge of Loughborough, the Church was built originally as a Mission Room in 1888.

The lectern, altar rails and aumbry woodwork all have a matching design and were made by a specialist in this field. Many of the items in Church have been donated in memory of loved ones.

The mission room was dedicated in the late 1950s as The Church of St. Mary-in-Charnwood – as we know it today. Originally, the Vestry comprised a small area to the left of the Altar. By 1960 a new Vestry had been built to the side of the Church and this, in turn, was replaced by the Chapter House in 1999. This is a community resource – it is used by other churches for ‘time away’ for meetings, retreats etc. and also by other groups and individuals seeking a meeting place. It is also an ideal venue for children’s birthday parties.

Additionally there is a well equipped kitchen; facilities for the lesser abled (toilet and easy access to the ground floor); large off road car park within the Church grounds; access to the wood (with its viewing point and meeting place); the Memorial Garden which adjoins the Chapter House and a barbeque area in the car park.

Radar is Loughborough University’s contemporary arts programme, enabling creative exploration and furthering critical debate through commissions, films and conversation.

The University is the largest single site campus in the country and as such offers artists a rich source of material and knowledge to inform and develop their practice. With each programme artists are invited to tap into this resource, whether that be through a dialogue that informs the conceptual framework or through utilising the technical and production facilities available. This process of interaction between artist and academic and artist and university is central to the programme. While the artistic outputs are not confined to one space, or to the campus, the relationship to the context is fixed, providing a bond between the divergent responses.

The artistic outputs are also used to engender further debate and exploration of the ideas contained within the work. The art works are used to initiate conversations between different disciplines, not only artist and academic but academic and academic and student and academic further encouraging a mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and skills.

‘Changing Spaces Trading Places’ is a Heritage Lottery Funded project as part of the ‘All Our Stories’ initiative. This project is being hosted by Charnwood Arts and explores the cross cultural and inter-generational legacy of forced and economic migration in the city of Leicester and Leicestershire and in particular the textile trade. It explores industry, commerce, settlement, domestic life, trade and the triangle of relations between India, Africa and the UK.’

During the project we will:

* Train 20 young volunteers in recording and preserving the older generations memories

* Collect archival material from the local community who worked in the textile trade

* Discover how the old factories have changed through a photo story

* Deliver a variety of community events to bring the generations together

* Produce an exhibition, a book and a learning resource for Schools

We will be working with local photographer Kajal Patel, who is recognised internationally for her social documentary work to make a permanent photographic record of the project. (see http://www.kajalpatel.com)

Kajal is currently exhibiting at Format under the theme of ‘Factories.’ We are really excited to have Kaj working with us on this project and bringing her expertise and professionalism!

http://www.formatfestival.com/artists/kajal-nisha-patel

We are looking for volunteers who would like to train in recording, interviewing, research and collating archival material for this project. You will be working in the local community and helping to organise events. You will then learn how to assist with the multi-media production of an exhibition and a book! This is a great opportunity for anybody that wants experience in working in the local community and wants to learn about cultural heritage! If you would like more details contact Leylah Bhamra on 07894880527 or call Rebecca Abrahams at Charnwood Arts on 01509 821035

Samual Brown

Sam Brown is a passionate and enthusiastic creative designer, able to work with an array of mixed media software to produce new and inspiring visual works for both advertising and personal design.

“Born in Leicester, England I studied Graphic Design and Interactive media at Leicester St.Margerets College excelling at the highest level.
I have worked with the local Charnwood Arts Department in Loughborough, who are an independent arts and education charity organisation famous for community arts and event projects in the east midlands of England.
Even during my studies I gained a multitude of firsthand experience when I was asked to work with the print department of Leicester College in an advertising campaign to entice high school graduates to consider design in the print industry as an option for further education.

I currently hold a distinction grade at GNVQ level for graphic design as well as Merit level National GNVQ for Interactive media both gained at Leicester College.

My other interests include music film and travel. I am a keen musician and self confessed movie critic. When I’m not designing writing or watching anything in my spare time I like to be out and about, getting involved in voluntary projects...
